Vonk Spark, to the home page

Science for ages 10 to 16

See it happen, understand why.

Science starts with looking. Vonk begins with an experiment or an observation, lets you play with it and then works towards the explanation, with an experiment you can safely do at home.

See itTry it: change the mass and the volume, and pick the liquid

ρ=160:200=0.8 g/cm³ · The block floats

water: 1 g/cm³

160 g
200 cm³
Density of the block: 0.8 g/cm³. Water: about 1 g/cm³. The block floats.
  1. Question

Why does a big block of wood float while a small pebble sinks?

  2. Hypothesis

    I think heavy things sink.

  3. Experiment

Change the mass, the volume and the liquid.

  4. Conclusion

Weight does not decide, density does.

Three new exercises every day, the same for everyone. Do today's starter

How a topic works

First look, then play, then understand.

Every topic has the same four blocks, always in this order. So you always know where you are.

  1. Why

An observation or an experiment that makes you curious. Why does an ice cube float while a pebble sinks?

  2. See it

A picture to play with: slide, pick, switch. You see it happen before you have a formula or a technical word for it.

  3. Get it

The explanation in plain words, then the rule, and an example worked out step by step.

  4. Do it

Exercises that are checked straight away, with a hint and the solution. And a new exercise every time.

Then you read the typical misconceptions, where you meet it in real life, an experiment for home with a safety tip, a piece of history and what to know first or learn next.

Four strands

From forces to the Moon.

Who it is for

For those who learn, help and teach.

  • For pupils

Start with what surprises you. Play with the picture until you see it happen, and practise until you feel you get it. Mistakes are information, not punishment.

  • For parents

You don't need to remember it yourself. Every topic explains it as at school, with an experiment to do together and a question to talk about at the table.
