Day, night and the seasons

The Earth spins on its axis once every 24 hours: that gives us day and night. Over a year it travels around the Sun, and its tilted axis creates the seasons.

Year 6 and first stage of secondary schoolAges 10 to 13Draft: Not yet checked by a science teacher.

Why

Why is it still light at ten in the evening in June, while in December it is already dark at five?

In summer the Sun climbs high and stays in the sky for a long time. In winter it rises late, stays low above the houses and sets in the middle of the afternoon. Yet it is the same Sun and the same Earth.

Many people think the Earth is closer to the Sun in summer. That is not true: at the start of January we are actually at our closest to the Sun. The secret lies in the Earth's tilted axis.
