The solar system

The Sun is a star with eight planets around it: four small rocky planets close by and four giants far away. The distances between them are unimaginably large.

Year 6 and first stage of secondary schoolAges 10 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a science teacher.

Why

If the Sun switched off for a moment, how long would it take before we noticed on Earth?

Light is the fastest thing there is: about 300 000 km per second. Even so, sunlight takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach us. The light you see now set off a few minutes ago.

That tells you something about how big the solar system is. Drawings in books put the planets neatly side by side, but to scale they are incredibly far apart and tiny.
