Separating mixtures
Most materials around you are mixtures. Because the substances in them differ in size, boiling point, magnetism or density, you can take them apart again.
Why
How do you get salt back out of seawater, and clear water out of muddy water?
Seawater is water with salt dissolved in it. You can no longer see the salt, but it is still there. Leave seawater in the sun and the water evaporates, leaving a thin white layer of salt behind.
Muddy water is different: tiny grains float in it, and those you can see. You can hold them back with a filter. So each kind of mixture needs its own way of separating.
