The electric circuit

A bulb only lights up in a closed circuit of battery, wires and lamp. Connected in series or in parallel, bulbs behave differently.

First and second stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 15Draft: Not yet checked by a science teacher.

Why

Why do some sets of Christmas lights go out completely when a single bulb is broken, while others do not?

You hang up the Christmas lights and nothing comes on. After a long search, it turns out that one single bulb is loose. With another string of lights, everything keeps shining, apart from that one bulb.

The difference lies in how the bulbs are connected. Electric current can only flow if there is a closed path, a circuit. If the bulbs all sit one after another on a single path, one broken bulb breaks the whole path. If each bulb has its own path, the others stay lit.
