Solid, liquid and gas

Every substance is made of tiny particles that never stop moving, and the warmer it gets, the faster they go. That is how ice turns into water and water into steam.

Year 6 and first stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a science teacher.

Why

Why is there dew on the grass in the morning, even though it did not rain during the night?

Air always contains invisible water vapour. That vapour is water as a gas. At night the grass and the ground cool down a lot, and so does the air just above them.

Cold water vapour particles move more slowly and stick to each other and to the grass. That way they become liquid water again: dewdrops. This is called condensation. To understand it, you need to look at the particles.
