Digestion

A mouthful of food travels about eight metres through your body. Along the way it is ground up and broken down into small building blocks that reach every cell through your blood.

First stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a science teacher.

Why

Why does a piece of bread taste sweeter if you chew it for a really long time?

Try chewing a bite of bread or a cracker for a minute without swallowing. After a while you taste something sweet, even though there's no sugar in it. Your mouth is already digesting: saliva breaks starch down into sugars.

Your cells can't do anything with a sandwich or a chip. They need small building blocks, such as glucose, that fit through the wall of your gut and your blood vessels. Digestion is the long journey that turns a mouthful of food into particles that small.
