Density: float or sink
Density tells you how much mass is packed into each cubic centimetre of a substance. If an object is less dense than the liquid around it, it floats.
Why
Why does a big wooden raft float on the Scheldt, while a small iron bolt sinks straight away?
The raft is much heavier than the bolt. Yet it floats. So how heavy something is in total does not decide whether it floats.
What counts is how tightly the mass is packed. A 1 cm³ block of wood holds less mass than 1 cm³ of water. 1 cm³ of iron holds much more. That mass per volume is called density.
