The cell

Everything that lives is made of cells. A plant cell and an animal cell look alike, but a plant cell also has a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large vacuole.

First stage of secondary schoolAges 11 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a science teacher.

Why

Why does a plant stand upright without a skeleton, while a jellyfish on the beach at Ostend collapses into a flat heap?

A plant has no bones, and yet a tulip stands perfectly straight. The secret is in every tiny piece of the plant: each plant cell has a sturdy wall and is filled with water that pushes against that wall, like the air in a pumped-up bicycle tyre. If the plant gets too little water, those cells empty out and it droops.

A jellyfish is an animal. Its cells have no sturdy wall, only a thin skin. In the sea the water carries it, but on dry land it collapses. To see that difference you have to look closer than your eyes can: with a microscope.
