Phases of the Moon

The Moon does not give off light of its own. It reflects sunlight. As it travels round the Earth in about 29.5 days, we keep seeing a different part of its lit half.

Year 6 and first stage of secondary schoolAges 10 to 13Draft: Not yet checked by a science teacher.

Why

Why is the Moon a thin crescent one week and a half circle a week later?

Look at the Moon every evening for a month. You see it grow from a narrow sliver into a full, round Moon, and then shrink again until it seems to vanish completely for a few nights.

The Moon itself does not change shape. It is always a ball. What changes is how much we see of the side that the Sun lights up.
